Are you passionate about caring for and styling natural hair? If so, starting a natural hair blog will enable you to share your passion with the world and make money as well.
A natural hair blog is a niche blog and niche blogs are an excellent way to generate income online. I’ll share with you some of the essentials you need to get started, tips for writing blogs posts, and how to make money with your content.
That being said, let’s get started!
Starting a Natural Hair Blog Setup
There are three things you will need to get your blog going. I highly recommend getting your own self-hosted WordPress blog. Meaning, avoid the free blogging services that you find online.
Free blogging services often limit you on how you can make money with your blog. Some of them will even place their own ads on your website.
Another thing to be aware of is that you could lose all of your content if a free service closes down your account. A self-hosted WordPress blog means you own your blog from the start.
You will need three things to get started:
- A domain name
- Web hosting
- Installing WordPress
You can get everything you need with any commercial web hosting provider. The web hosting provider that I use (WPX Hosting) can register your domain name, set up your hosting, and you can install WordPress on your domain in one click:
If all of the technical stuff is overwhelming to you, you can also set up your niche blog using the same step-by-step training I used when I got started.
That training is what helped me to create my niche blog and grow it from zero to making a consistent monthly income with affiliate marketing.
Finding Topics for Your Blog Posts
You likely have plenty of content ideas for your blog already. However, if you want to get more traffic to your blog, you will need to do some keyword research.
Keyword research is simply figuring out what people in your niche are searching for. The easiest way to get started is to open up Google search.
Begin typing in keyword phrases related to your niche. Google’s autofill feature will show you what people are searching for.
Here are some keyword phrases that I found:
- natural hair styles for kids
- caring for natural hair in the winter
- caring for natural hair under a wig
- keeping natural hair detangled
- best natural hair oil for hair growth and thickness
These are only the tip of the iceberg. There are so many more keyword phrases that you can find by doing a quick search.
You likely have a good idea of how to answer these queries and if not, you can always do some research or ask natural hair care stylists for their feedback.
Getting Free Web Traffic From Your Blog Posts
Writing on topics your audience is looking for is definitely the primary way to start getting indexed and ranked in the search engines. When that happens, your blog will begin receiving visitors.
Here are some other SEO tips that are basic but effective:
Basic SEO Tips for Blogging
Let’s say you are going to write a post on natural hair styles for kids and that is your keyword phrase. Be sure that you place that phrase in your blog title.
You could make your title say: 8 Natural Hair Styles for Kids That are Quick and Easy. Next, you’ll want to add your keyword phrase in the first paragraph of your blog post and then naturally as you continue writing.

Write New Blog Posts On a Regular Basis
Another important and critical tip is to write blog posts on a regular basis. Your blog will not grow if you do not take the time to create new posts.
The more content that you create, the more you increase the chances of your posts being found for various keyword terms.
In my experience of starting a new niche blog, I begin receiving web traffic within the first 3 to 6 months. As time goes on, my traffic increases.
However, nothing will happen if you are not creating content. Be diligent and write at least 1 to 2 new posts per week. That is the bare minimum and is completely doable even with the busiest schedule.
You can create a variety of posts. Some of these can include:
- Product reviews
- How-to posts
- List posts (5 best, top 10, etc.)
- Interview posts (interview someone in the industry)
Making Money with Your Blog
Now let’s get into the exciting part of making money with your blog! There are several ways that you can make money with a blog but the two most common include affiliate marketing and display ads.
How Display Ads Work
Display ads are pretty simple. Once your blog is receiving a good amount of traffic and page views, you can apply to display ad networks like AdThrive and MediaVine.
When you’re approved by a display ad network, you will get instructions on how to place these ads on your blog. When visitors click on these ads, your blog makes money.
How Affiliate Marketing Works
Out of all of the ways to make money with a niche blog, affiliate marketing is by far my favorite.
Affiliate marketing is the promotion of another company’s products in exchange for a commission when a sale is made.
Being that your blog will be in the hair niche, there are TONS of affiliate products that you can recommend and make commissions from.
Here are some affiliate products and their commission rates:
- Shop Naturally Curly – 5%
- The Puff Cuff – 10%
- Your Natural Hair Box – $10 per subscriber
- Natural Oils for Hair – 20%
There are many more that you can apply to. Affiliate programs are free to join. After you’ve been approved by an affiliate program, you will get access to special tracking links called affiliate links.
You can place these affiliate links within your blog content when recommending products. When web visitors click on your affiliate links and buy products from the merchant’s website, you receive a commission.
These commissions add up in the span of a month. Most affiliate programs pay every month via PayPal, check, or sometimes by direct deposit.
When I created my niche blog I had no idea how to make money with it. That is why I purposely searched for a training program.
By following the training and implementing what I learned, I was able to go from zero to a consistent monthly income online with my blog.
